Product Care

At Centrum Furniture, we’re committed to providing you with beautiful, long-lasting furniture. To ensure that your pieces continue to look their best and stand the test of time, it’s important to give them the proper care. Below are some simple guidelines for caring for various materials as well as advice on how to safely move our larger items.

Caring for Solid Timber Furniture

Solid timber is known for its strength and natural beauty, and with the right care, it will age gracefully.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down surfaces regularly. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives, as they can damage the wood’s finish. A mild soap solution is best.

  • Polishing: Use a quality timber polish or wax every few months to maintain its sheen. Be sure to follow the product instructions carefully.

  • Environment: Avoid placing timber furniture in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this can cause warping or fading.

  • Spillages: Clean up spills immediately with a dry cloth to prevent staining. Avoid water sitting on the surface for too long.

Caring for Leather

Leather is durable and luxurious but requires attention to keep its soft, supple look.

  • Cleaning: Dust your leather furniture regularly with a soft cloth. Use a damp cloth for light cleaning, but avoid excessive water.

  • Conditioning: To keep the leather from drying out or cracking, apply a leather conditioner every 3-6 months. This will nourish the material and keep it looking fresh.

  • Avoid Sharp Objects: Be cautious with sharp or abrasive items that could scratch the surface.

  • Spills: For liquid spills, blot (don’t rub) the area with a dry cloth as soon as possible. Use a specific leather cleaner if necessary.

Caring for Goat Hide

Goat hide pieces add texture and style to your space, and with a little extra care, they’ll last for years.

  • Cleaning: Gently brush the hair with a soft brush to remove dust and debris.

  • Spot Cleaning: For small stains, use a clean, damp cloth. Do not rub harshly, as this can cause the hair to tangle or come out.

  • Avoid Moisture: Keep your goat hide furniture away from moisture and water, as it can damage the hide.

  • Sunlight: Like timber, goat hide can fade if left in direct sunlight for too long.

Caring for Rattan

Rattan furniture is lightweight and stylish, but it’s important to protect it from the elements.

  • Cleaning: Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the weave, or wipe with a soft, damp cloth.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight and Moisture: Rattan can become brittle if exposed to too much sun or moisture. Keep it indoors or in a covered area if possible.

  • Polish: Every few months, wipe the rattan with a slightly damp cloth, followed by a light application of furniture polish to protect and enhance the natural finish.

Safely Moving and Transporting Large Items

Many of our furniture pieces are large and heavy, and proper handling is essential to avoid damage or injury.

  • Get Help: Always have at least two people available to move bulky items. This prevents accidents and reduces strain.

  • Use Furniture Sliders or Dollies: These are perfect for moving heavy furniture over short distances, especially across hardwood or carpeted floors.

  • Protect During Transport: Use protective blankets or padding to cover your furniture during transport. Secure each piece to prevent it from shifting or bumping into other objects during transit.

Securing Your Furniture for Child Safety

At Centrum Furniture, we care about your family’s safety. If you have children in the house, securing your furniture is essential to prevent accidental toppling, especially for larger or taller items like bookcases, dressers, and entertainment units. Here are some important tips to help keep your home safe:

  • Anchor Tall Furniture: Always secure tall furniture, such as shelving units, wardrobes, or TV stands, to the wall using anti-tip brackets or wall straps. Most of our pieces come with hardware to assist in anchoring, but if not, these can be purchased separately.

  • Place Heavier Items at the Bottom: Keep heavier items, like books or electronics, on the lower shelves or drawers to ensure the furniture’s center of gravity stays low.

  • Avoid Climbing Hazards: Children may be tempted to climb furniture, especially if toys or other attractive objects are placed high up. Avoid placing items that may entice children to reach or climb onto furniture.

  • Install Safety Latches: For furniture with drawers, consider installing safety latches to prevent kids from pulling them all the way out, which could cause the piece to become unbalanced.

  • TV Safety: If you have a television on an entertainment unit, make sure it’s securely fastened to both the furniture and, if possible, the wall behind it to prevent tipping.

By securing your furniture properly, you’re taking an important step to safeguard your family and prevent accidents.
